PRESS RELEASE
Active-net announces first ever keynote speaker
23 Feb 2026
Dr Heather McKee announced as inaugural keynote speaker at active-net National / Heather McKee
Behaviour change specialist Dr Heather McKee has been announced as the inaugural keynote speaker at active-net National, taking place at Eastwood Hall, Nottingham, on 26-27 March 2026.
Widely regarded as one of the leading voices in behaviour science, Dr McKee’s keynote will tackle one of the fitness sector’s most persistent and commercially significant challenges: how to build long-term member motivation and consistency in an industry where drop-out remains high and sustained engagement is increasingly difficult to achieve. Her session aligns with the event’s theme, Mindset to Momentum: Driving Behaviour Change for Wellbeing.
“Maintaining member engagement in the long term remains one of the biggest operational and commercial challenges facing our sector,” said David Monkhouse, director, Active-Insight. “Dr McKee brings a rare combination of deep academic expertise and a practical understanding of how behaviour science can be applied in real fitness environments. Her keynote will give operators, instructors and personal trainers clear, actionable strategies to improve adherence, strengthen engagement and ultimately deliver better outcomes for their members.”
As motivation science advisor to Myzone, Dr McKee has been working closely with its internal product development team as the brand pioneers a new category of FitTech, known as Motivation Technology (MoTech), an approach that embeds behavioural science into digital physical activity experiences to reward effort, build habits and sustain engagement over time. Rather than focusing on performance or aesthetics, this emerging category reframes success around consistency, community and long-term behaviour change, principles that directly support retention, loyalty and lifetime member value.
“Member drop-out is the single greatest barrier to growth for fitness operators globally,” said Jay Worthy, CEO of Myzone. “Motivation Technology turns the science of behaviour change into practical, everyday tools that help people stay active for longer. For operators, that means stronger engagement, higher retention and more sustainable commercial growth. The future of our industry isn’t just technology-enabled, it’s behaviour-enabled.”
In her active-net keynote, Dr McKee will explore why members disengage, how small environmental and communication changes can dramatically improve consistency, and how operators can apply behavioural science across onboarding, programming and the wider member journey to build habits that last.
“My passion is understanding what truly drives motivation, and how to turn that initial spark into lasting habits,” said Dr McKee. “In fitness, it’s rarely about willpower. It’s about designing environments, experiences and systems that make the healthy choice the easy choice. At active-net, I’ll be sharing practical ways operators can apply behaviour science so more members stay engaged, attend more regularly and build activity into their lives for the long term.”
Active-net National brings together operators and suppliers from across the physical activity and leisure sector for focused, pre-arranged one-to-one meetings, creating meaningful connections that drive collaboration, innovation and commercial progress.
Active-net National 2026 is now fully booked for suppliers and operators. To reserve your space for active-net National 2027, which runs 25-26 March 2027, email [email protected]

“Myzone’s not just a flashy screen. It’s motivation technology, community and a social platform working together to keep people engaged long term.
“There is clear correlation between high Myzone engagement and strong coaching participation. It also creates stronger retention because members feel part of a community and have that extra layer of accountability that keeps them coming back.”
– Donald DesPierre III, fitness manager, Anytime Fitness Clubs

“We decided that we’d give every member a Myzone belt on joining and that it was an integral part of our ‘Thrive Welcome Process’. We did this because it was 100% in-line with our vision of helping more people be active and feel good.
“At Thrive, we use Myzone during every session to help effectively coach our members to get the most out of the session. That doesn’t mean always pushing, but rather educating effort levels and helping with recovery. It helps members understand how to effectively train for different types of sessions from personal training to our fitness classes.”

“When people understand effort, it makes all the difference. When you say eight out of 10 to 30 people, every individual’s effort is different. When you learn about your own effort, you start to feel it in your body.
“That’s why I love using Myzone. We're also seeing our David Lloyd gym members using Myzone in the Pilates Reformer studio, too. Reformer is harder than it looks, and people are starting to see the benefits of a heart rate monitor within a wide variety of fitness training genres.
“We’ll all never go without it. I’ve got to get my MEPs!”
