Community sports centre opens in Tiptree
A £2.3m community sports centre has opened to meet the health and fitness needs of the fast-growing village of Tiptree in Essex.
The Tiptree Community Sports Centre is located at Thurstable School, which has worked with Colchester Borough Council work to deliver the leisure facility to benefit both students and the wider community.
The development secured funding from a variety of partners including the Big Lottery Fund, the Football Foundation and Essex County Council.
Donations were also received from the local community and a sponsored 6,000km run by students, the local MP and other dignitaries raised more than £9,000.
Colchester Borough Council manages the site, which has a joint-use agreement with Essex Local Education Authority and Thurstable School to use the site out of school hours and share maintenance costs for the sports centre areas.
Facilities include a fitness centre equipped by Nautilus, a dance studio, gymnasium, artificial turf pitch and conference area.
Nick Hammond, headmaster of Thurstable School, said: “This has been an outstanding project which has demonstrated the strength of the collaboration that exists between many partners.
“These top class facilities will encourage more and more children and adults to lead active and healthy lifestyles.”
