PRESS RELEASE
Wheelchair user Richard Cartwright attempts world record marathon on SkiErg machine to mark National Fitness Day
19 Sep 2025
Richard Cartwright / Places Leisure
When: National Fitness Day – 12noon Wednesday, 24 September 2025
Where: Places Leisure Camberley, Grand Avenue, Camberley, GU15 3QH
Why: To promote inclusive fitness and mark National Fitness Day
In an inspiring display of endurance and determination, wheelchair user Richard Cartwright, is about to attempt to set a new world record for completing a marathon on a SkiErg machine.
The challenge will take place at Places Leisure Camberley on National Fitness Day, Wednesday 24 September 2025. It will see Richard, a Board Member for Places for People, attempt a world record for the first person to set a marathon time on a Concept2 SkiErg in the SIT 3 category (athletes who have no core function and minimal or no trunk movement).
The SkiErg, typically used to simulate Nordic skiing, is a challenging full-body workout machine. Richard’s world record attempt, which he is taking on 19 years – almost to the day – since the accident which left him paralysed, is not just a personal milestone it’s a powerful message about the importance of inclusion and the belief that everyone can be active, in whatever way works for them.
"Being active looks different for everyone," says Richard. "I want to show that no matter your ability, there’s a way to get moving, challenge yourself, and be part of a healthy, active lifestyle. Staying active isn’t just about physical fitness; it’s about mental wellbeing, confidence, and independence. Regular activity helps improve mood, reduce stress, and builds a sense of Community. For people like me, it’s about pushing boundaries and proving that limitations are often in our minds, not in our bodies. I’m also raising funds for Back Up Trust, a charity that has transformed the lives of so many people with spinal cord injuries – myself included."
The event also marks National Fitness Day, the UK’s most active day of the year. In celebration, Places Leisure is offering a free five-day pass to all its over 100 centres across the country, encouraging more people to kick-start or continue their fitness journeys. The free passes include access to gyms, classes and swimming pools in its facilities across the country.
“We’re incredibly proud of Richard and inspired by his determination,” said Belinda Steward, Managing Director at Places Leisure. “His attempt highlights how fitness should be accessible to all, regardless of ability or circumstance. Staying active is fundamental not just to physical health, but to overall quality of life. It helps prevent illness, supports mental health, and brings people together. Through this event and our free five-day pass offer, we want to encourage everyone to find their own way to move, enjoy activity, and experience its benefits.”
The public is welcome to come along to Places Leisure Camberley to cheer Richard on during his challenge and to explore the facilities with the free pass offer.
