The research, released in a report entitled Complementary Medicine, also reveals that nearly half of British women – 49 per cent – and 28 per cent of men have used complementary medication and would use it again.
A further 27 per cent of British adults surveyed had not yet used complementary medication, but would consider it in the future.
Herbal remedies such as green tea varieties and echinacea proved the most popular amongst those surveyed, accounting for almost two thirds – 63 per cent – of respondents.
According to the research, homeopathic treatments, such as arnica cream and aromatherapy treatments, such as essential oils, both saw a 24 per cent growth in sales over the five year period since 2002.
The research was based on a nationally representative sample of 1,039 adults aged 15 years-old and above.
