£6.5m Leicester youth centre scheme scrapped
Plans for the conversion of Leicester's Haymarket Theatre into a new £6.5m youth centre have been axed by the local authority due to financial constraints.
Leicester City Council (LCC) had received £5m from the government to help progress the transformation of the venue, which was replaced by the Curve theatre in 2008. However, the council has now revealed that it has been forced to withdraw from the project as a result of reductions to its capital and revenue income.
LCC cabinet member for children and schools Vi Dempster said: "This initiative relied on a partnership approach and clearly the devastating cuts across the whole of the public sector has forced us to withdraw from this particular project."
