US plastic surgery societies issue safety advisory on medi-spas

The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) have issued patient safety advice regarding medi-spas.
As there are no national US standards for medi-spas and no recognised definition of what constitutes a medi-spa, the societies have issued a list of questions patients should ask before committing to any procedure or medical treatment in a spa or non-traditional facility.
The comprehensive list includes finding out whether the medi-spa the patient intends to use is located within a physician’s office, finding out who will perform any injections, checking they are licensed to perform the procedure and what the credentials are of any other physicians supervising their treatment.
The ASAPS is a leading US organisation of board-certified plastic surgeons specialising in cosmetic surgery while the ASPS has more than 6,000 members and comprises 94 per cent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the US.
