Trump plans £200m hotel for Toronto
Donald Trump, the real estate developer and casino operator, announced yesterday that he is planning to build a luxury residential and hotel estate in Toronto, Canada.
Should the multi-million pound plans go ahead, it would be Trump’s first venture outside the US.
Rising to a height of 68 storeys and situated near Toronto’s financial district, the $376m (£207m) Trump International Hotel & Tower would be the tallest hotel building in Canada.
The lower 34 floors of the building, designed by Toronto’s Zeidler Partnership Architects, will be reserved for the hotel suites.
Featuring 229 rooms, the hotel would become the first five-star accommodation in Canada.
The upper half of the 308-metre tower will be luxury condominiums, costing up to $11m (£6.5m) each.
The building would also house an 18,000sq ft health club and spa and a number of trendy restaurants and bars.
The plans were initially announced back in 2001, but fell through after Trump’s intended partner in the scheme, the Ritz Carlton hotel group, pulled out.
Trump is famous for both his amazing recovery from near-bankruptcy in the 1990’s and the recent US hit TV series, The Apprentice.
He bought what is now the Trump Building in 1990, when New York real estate was still depressed, for just $1m. The property is now worth more than $500m.
