One of the UK’s largest pub operators, Punch Taverns, has suffered a fall in sales and profits.
In a trading statement, the company said trading in the last eight weeks had been downcast, as like-for-like sales fell 2.2 per cent and profits were down 0.8 per cent.
Punch, which currently owns an estate of 8,450 pubs, blamed the falls on what it called a “challenging period for the sector”.
A spokesperson said: “Trading in the last weeks has been more subdued, with declining consumer confidence coinciding with the impact of the smoking ban in England and Wales.”
