Liverpool scheme raises UNESCO concerns

Plans for the regeneration of disused docklands in Liverpool have been met with concern by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).
At the 35th session of UNESCO's World Heritage Committee, it was revealed that there was "extreme concern" about the potential impact of the £5.5bn Liverpool Waters development. Fears have been raised that the regeneration plans could damage the 'Outstanding Universal Value' of the docklands, which could also affect its World Heritage Site status.
Covering 150 acres (60.7 hectares), the scheme proposes a cultural building, restaurants and the 55-storey Shanghai Tower - the tallest UK building outside London.
