Irish pools to undergo access improvements
Irish tourism and sport minister Michael Ring has confirmed that EUR4.4m (£3.9m) will be shared by 19 swimming pools in order to enhance access for people with disabilities.
A range of improvements will be funded through the cash package earmarked by Ring, such as the installation of new ramps and hoists; widened doorways; and new changing areas. Leisureland Salthill (Galway City Council); Drogheda Leisure Centre (Drogheda Borough Council); and three Dublin City Council facilities are among those to benefit.
Meanwhile, Ring has also announced the launch of the Green Swimming Pool initiative in a bid to help the same 19 pools to become more energy efficient and cut carbon emissions. Ring said: "By making [the pools] more efficient, we are also reducing the burden on taxpayers by cutting back on energy and water requirements."
