Culture secretary Purnell takes over from Hain
Culture secretary James Purnell has taken over from Peter Hain, the secretary of state for work and pensions, and has been succeeded by Andy Burnham.
Hain resigned from his post in order to clear his name after the announcement that police would be investigating for neglecting to report donations to his deputy leadership campaign.
Purnell succeeded Tessa Jowell as secretary of state for culture, media and sport in June last year as part of Gordon Brown’s cabinet reshuffle when he was appointed Prime Minister. Jowell went on to become minister for the Olympics.
