Christina Ong to open first spa resort in Bhutan
The remote Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan is to see the opening of its first ever spa resort, thanks to hotelier Christina Ong.
Ong’s company Como Hotels & Resorts – which owns the Halkin and Metropolitan Hotels in London, Parrot Cay in the Caribbean and Cocoa Island in the Maldives – has been chosen by the King of Bhutan to develop Uma Paro, a 38-acre resort in western Bhutan. Ong is the first foreign investor ever to build a hotel in the country, where tourism is strictly restricted.
The resort, to open in April 2004, will comprise 20 rooms, 10 villas, a restaurant, bar, and Shambhala Spa. Architect Yew Kuan and interior designer Katherine King of ID Design will work on the project.
The spa will have a yoga room, whirlpool, sauna, gym, reception, three treatment rooms, pool and shop. Activities will range from fishing to visits to local monasteries. Details: www.comohotelsandresorts.com
