Asbestos delays £2m Buxton Pool revamp
Work on the first phase of a £2m revamp of a swimming pool in Buxton, Derbyshire, has been delayed further after asbestos was discovered at the venue.
Earlier this year, High Peak Borough Council (HPBC) was forced to put back the completion date for stage one after a concrete floor was found to be in poor condition and a structural steel frame had to be replaced. A revised completion date for the first phase at Buxton Swimming Pool - featuring a new changing village, new windows and a new roof - will now be agreed with contractors.
Once complete, work will start on the second stage of the project and is to include a new 150sq m (1,615sq ft) fitness suite with 35 machines of cv, resistance and free weights equipment. Technogym and Precor are expected to supply the facility, while a group exercise studio is also included among the plans for Stage Two.
HPBC leader Tony Ashton said: "Although invasive survey work had been undertaken to establish the extent of asbestos in the building, the asbestos under the pool itself could not have been discovered before the stripping out work was started." DC Leisure operates Buxton Swimming Pool on behalf of the council.
