press release: Your Personal Training
CPD is not optional: Why continuous learning must sit at the heart of our sector
Your Personal Training is deeply passionate about continuing professional development, not because it is fashionable, measurable, or easy to commercialise, but because it is fundamental to the future of our sector.
CPD should be affordable, accessible and something that anyone working in health, fitness and wellbeing is consistently involving themselves in. That might be formal courses, in-person events like LevelUp or short-form online learning such as LevelUp Lite.
Whether or not it carries CPD points is secondary in my opinion – what matters is continued learning.
The pace of change has outgrown the industry’s learning habits
Health, fitness and wellbeing have never been a static discipline. It is now evolving faster than ever; it’s an incredibly exciting moment for the industry, but I also sense a lot of hesitation driven, understandably, by the fear of being left behind.
Training methods, nutrition, recovery, psychology, behaviour change, technology, AI, wearables, data, red-light therapy, cold exposure, HBOT, longevity, women’s health – these are no longer fringe topics. They’ve moved firmly into the mainstream, and they’re already reshaping what clients expect from us.
Without consistent learning, professionals fall behind and when professionals fall behind, the sector falls behind. Today, information is widely accessible. Many members are well-read, curious, and informed. In some cases, they know as much as, if not more than the professionals supporting them.
That is not a threat, but it is a responsibility.
Learning is the difference between participation and leadership
I know from experience that without continuous learning, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Learning hasn’t just come from courses or seminars – it’s come from spending time with people across the sector, from every discipline, and from adjacent industries like tech, hospitality and marketing.
That exposure is what allows me to speak confidently about health, fitness, nutrition, new technologies and the wider wellness space. It’s what gives me the ability to challenge thinking, link ideas together and contribute to the direction our sector is moving, while keeping our organisation ahead of the curve. This isn’t just about curiosity; it’s a professional responsibility.
This isn’t exclusive to me. Anyone can access this, as long as they commit to learning and value CPD as more than a tick-box exercise. It has to become a lifelong habit.
Why CPD must matter to operators, not just individuals
For too long, CPD has been framed as an individual responsibility and an operational cost which limits its impact.
When operators actively value CPD, something different happens: standards rise, capability improves, confidence grows, retention increases and new services and revenue opportunities emerge.
Better-qualified professionals can deliver more specialist services, support wider populations, and create experiences that genuinely differentiate facilities and brands.
Equally as important, people who feel invested in are more likely to stay. In an industry where recruitment is expensive and disruptive, retention is not just cultural – it’s commercial.
CPD done properly supports both.
The risk of standing still
This is not about criticising individuals or organisations. The industry has done a great deal of good, often with limited support and inconsistent frameworks.
The biggest risk now is complacency.
If learning is not prioritised from the top down, by operators, leaders, and senior teams, then professionals are left to navigate change alone and that’s daunting for anyone. Some will thrive regardless but many will not, and the gap between where the sector is and where it needs to be will continue to widen.
A shared commitment to learning
At Your Personal Training, we believe CPD should be:
- Normalised, not exceptional
- Culturally expected and rewarded
- Rewarded, not ignored
- Continuous, not episodic
We believe it should extend beyond formal qualifications; learning can take many forms, and all of them matter if they contribute to better thinking, better conversations, and better outcomes.
The future of our sector depends on curiosity, openness, and a genuine commitment to growth, from trainers and instructors, through managers and leaders, all the way to operators and owners.
CPD is not an expense or obligation, but the foundation of relevance, credibility, and long-term success in an industry that cannot afford to stand still.
Your Personal Training continues to invest heavily in its PTs, providing ongoing development opportunities that support long-term, rewarding careers in the fitness industry. The organisation offers a full end-to-end solution for aspiring trainers: individuals can train through Your Academy to gain their qualifications, access specialist CPD courses to upskill, receive support finding a role within gyms and benefit from marketing and business guidance to build a thriving personal training career.
