£5m grant for Ravenscraig
£5m of funding has been awarded by sportscotland to develop a Regional Sports Facility in Ravenscraig, North Lanarkshire.
Featuring a full-size indoor football pitch and a 135m six-lane, indoor athletics training strip, there will also be a 12-court sports hall at the facility and a number of outdoor turf and synthetic football pitches.
The sports facility is part of a £1bn regeneration of the former steel-works site in Ravenscraig. It will have a capacity for 2,000 spectators at indoor football events and 5,000 for other events.
The funding for the sports facility was awarded by sportscotland after a strategy was developed with advice from Locum Destination Consulting, regarding how developers could create a sustainable, integrated urban community as part of the larger regeneration scheme.
It has also been proposed that the facility could house the new headquarters of Sportscotland.
The Ravenscraig funding was awarded as part of a £49.5m allocation of public money from the National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy Fund among six local authorities for the development of 10 multi-sport sites across Scotland.
Alastair Dempster, chair of sportscotland, said: “Significant investment is required in Scotland’s national and regional sports facilities if we are to develop future successful sporting generations, supporting the pathways from participation to excellence.
“Through the National and Regional Sports Facilities Strategy, we are now ready to deliver an exciting and ambitious programme that can begin to provide Scotland’s future sporting infrastructure that will best meet national, regional and local requirements.”
