£30m war collection opens in Manchester
The Imperial War Museum North opened in Trafford Park on the south bank of the Manchester Ship Canal on 5 July.
The museum has two exhibition areas, the main exhibition space and a separate gallery which will host a programme of exhibitions and will include modern and contemporary art and photographs from the Imperial War Museum's (IWM) collection.
Six display areas within the main exhibition space cover key themes of 20th century history, while a 220m, 3D timeline around the walls chronicles events from 1900.
A 360° large-scale, audio-visual experience, The Big Picture, will present images onto the gallery walls and floor. One of three presentations, lasting 15 minutes each, will be shown each hour.
The £30m museum, housed in the 'Earth Shard' building designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, includes a 29m-high viewing platform which overlooks the city.
Peel Holdings, owner of Manchester Ship Canal, provided £12.5m. Further funding came from the European Regional Development Fund, English Partnerships North West Development Agency and Trafford Metropolitan Borough Council, as well as the IWM itself.
The museum offers corporate and events facilities, as well as a restaurant with panoramic views. Entry is free and it aims to attract 300,000 visitors in the first year. Details: +44 (0)161 836 4000
