West Midlands leisure centre to close
Willenhall Leisure Centre in the West Midlands is being closed by Walsall Council.
The decision to close the centre was made earlier this year as part of the council’s efforts to reduce expenditure.
Willenhall was selected for closure because it was the council's poorest performing leisure centre, costing as much to run as the other sites, but serving only half as many people.
Councillor Anthony Harris, portfolio holder for leisure, culture and environment said: "It was a difficult decision to close Willenhall Leisure Centre, but given the pressure on council resources, the centre’s performance and the availability of other provision there was neither a business case nor compelling service justification to keep the centre open.
"The council is however keen to see some form of leisure provision continue there and on that basis we are seeking expressions of interest in the sale of the site."
The site could possibly be turned into a skating rink, a cinema or a concert hall.
