Twin town gymnasts visit Prudhoe
Gymnasts and coaches from Prudhoe's twin town of Mitry-Mory in France visited Tynedale at the weekend for the first Prudhoe International Gymnastics Tournament.
The 12 French gymnasts, aged between 6- and 14-years-old and their coaches stayed with local gymnasts from Prudhoe, who last year visited Mitry-Mory, near Paris, for a similar tournament.
The tournament took place over two days at Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham and Westworld in Prudhoe and was organised by North Country Leisure Tynedale and Prudhoe Town Twinning Association.
In addition to competing in the four areas of vault, floor, bar and beam, the gymnasts were treated to a Hawaiian themed pool party and a traditional fish and chip supper.
The tournament culminated in an Awards ceremony, with medals and trophies presented by Prudhoe Town Mayor Jennifer McGee and Chairman of Prudhoe Town Twinning Association, George McCreedy. The children from Prudhoe Westworld performed tremendously winning all 4 categories. Jessica Laidler won the under 8s category, Verity Hodgson-Bajoria won under 10s, Sophie Hollows the under 12s and the 13+ award went to Jessica Elliot.
Head coach Gayle Crowell said: "All of the gymnasts have worked extremely hard to prepare for this tournament. The relationship with members of Mitry-Mory Gymnastics Club has enabled our girls to enjoy some fantastic experiences and has brought us true friendships and sportsmanship. I hope that we are able to give many more Prudhoe gymnasts this opportunity in years to come."
The two clubs now intend to hold the event annually with each club hosting the event in alternate years. Plans are already underway for the return visit to France in 2010 and will be a great opportunity for local gymnasts to compete overseas and experience staying with their French counterparts.
