StreetSmart restaurant scheme raises £300,000 for the homeless
StreetSmart, which raises money for homeless charities through voluntary donations in restaurants, raised £311,000 during its Christmas 2002 campaign.
The initiative, launched in London in 1998, asks diners to add £1 to their restaurant bill during November and December.
Since its inception, restaurants in Bristol, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Oxford, Brighton and Hove, Cambridge, Bradford, Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle have joined the scheme, which last year saw a 20 per cent increase in donations on 2001.
All donations are distributed directly to charities, hostels and projects dedicated to helping the homeless in the city in which the donation was made.
Nick Emley, director of StreetSmart, said: 'One pound is an incredibly smallamount when two or three people are dining together. Out of those many, many small donations, a big project can grow and this is what is so important and crucial to StreetSmart's success in helping the homeless.'
All administrative, production and promotion costs of StreetSmart are covered by sponsorship from Barclays.
