Seaside towns to benefit from new grants scheme

Three coastal resorts are set to receive over £10m in the first part of a new government funding programme.
Blackpool, Dover and Torbay are the first three seaside towns to receive money from the Sea Change programme, a three-year DCMS scheme led by the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE). The initiative, which will run until 2011, will see CABE working alongside a number of public bodies, including Regional Development Agencies, English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund to provide £45m to coastal regeneration projects by investing in heritage and culture. Culture and tourism minister, Margaret Hodge, said: "The Sea Change scheme is all about kick starting regeneration through cultural investment in our seaside communities. These fantastic plans for Blackpool, Torbay and Dover will encourage new visitors to the area and enrich the community." Plans for a 20,000-capacity outdoor performance space in Blackpool will receive £4m from the first wave of Sea Change grants, as well as the redesign of the resort's streetscape. Nearly £2.25m will go towards two projects at Torbay's English Riviera Geopark, creating ten new studios and refurbishing the visitor centre. A further £3.85m will be used to help fund a possible cable car at a heritage site in Dover from the Western Dock to the town's castle. The money will also go towards improvements around the town's castle, including updating the secret wartime tunnels and the refurbishment of the Bleriot Monument. CABE's chief executive Richard Simmons said: "What is important about these projects is that they embed good design and culture as a catalyst for quality place making to benefit the community and visitors alike."Three coastal resorts are set to receive over £10m in the first part of a new government funding programme.
