Scottish Parliament approves Alcohol Bill
A restriction in off-sale promotions and a ban on 'quantity discounts' are to be introduced after the Scottish Parliament approved the new Alcohol Bill.
The legislation is designed to help combat alcohol misuse in Scotland, but does not include the introduction of a minimum price after opposition members rejected the proposals. Other measures incorporated into the Alcohol Bill include a new Challenge 25 verification scheme for all licensed premises and the potential for a new social responsibility levy.
Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "This legislation is also just part of the work ongoing in Scotland to tackle our unhealthy relationship with alcohol. "I believe this Bill is an important milestone towards changing Scotland's relationship with alcohol. But I am also clear that the journey is not over. There is more work to be done."
