Scottish Marine Bill passes first hurdle
New legislation, designed to introduce new measures for the protection of seas around the Scottish coast, has moved a step nearer after passing the first parliamentary stage.
The Scottish Government's proposed Marine Bill will set out new guidelines for the conservation of all Scottish waters within 200 nautical miles of the coast, which contain around 6,500 species of plants and animals. An amendment is expected to be added when the legislation goes back to the Rural Affairs and Environment Committee, which will add climate change targets to the Marine Bill in a bid to help Scotland cut emissions.
Scottish environment secretary Richard Lochhead said: "We owe it to future generations to ensure our seas are managed and harvested sustainably. Economic growth is vital but it should be balanced with protection for our stunning marine environment. "The measures contained in our new Marine Bill will help find the right balance and ensure our environment prospers for decades to come."
