Saudi Arabia will now allow photographs to be taken in public areas in a bid to attract more visitors the country.
The radical change in policy came about earlier this week when the interior ministry enacted a Royal Decree on the subject.
The state tourism body, which is behind the move, believes that the country can be best promoted via images taken by tourists and organisations of visitor attractions and places of interest.
However, permission is still required for photographs of people and private property, thereby ruling out images of the Royal Palace among others without prior authorisation.
A spokesperson for the Supreme Commission for Tourism said: “It is expected that these new regulations will help reflect the true image of the Kingdom by manifesting its beautiful culture and heritage, natural resources and tourism wealth.”
