Residents to help shape Newark museum plans
Local residents in Newark, Nottinghamshire, are to be given the chance to help develop plans for a new £4.43m English Civil War museum and national centre.
Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC) is looking to establish a new steering group to guide the regeneration of the town's Old Magnus Buildings, which will house the attraction. An English Civil War Gallery and a number of permanent and temporary exhibitions are planned, with the council hoping to secure a £2.8m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The proposed site features a Tudor Hall, a Georgian town house and a Victorian schoolroom, with the oldest elements dating back to 1529. NSDC museums manager Melissa Hall said: "We felt this was a particularly good time to do this. We have appointed Arts Training Central (ATC) to help us move things forward with the Friends Group, with grant aid from Renaissance East Midlands."
