New aquatic strategy for Luton
Leisure trust Active Luton has appointed Strategic Leisure to deliver a new strategy to help drive the future growth of aquatic sports in the Bedfordshire town and the surrounding area.
The trust, which runs sport and leisure services on behalf of Luton Borough Council (LBC), has selected the Warrington-based consultants to examine how to improve learning, education and participation opportunities. Current development plans - including the proposed new Aquatics Centre - and dashboard data held by the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) will be reviewed, while a detailed audit of existing local provision will also be undertaken.
The final aquatic strategy, which aims to complement LBC's indoor facilities strategy, will provide key recommendations for Active Leisure in terms of workforce and volunteer development, facility investment and the provision of opportunities in a wider range of water-based activities. Strategic Leisure managing director Rachel Fowler said: "Swimming and aquatic sports have a high profile at present, particularly as a result of the Free Swimming initiative.
"However, it is important that this profile and awareness be harnessed to best effect through a strategically developed and integrated framework to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate and enjoy the benefits of physical activity." Active Luton chief executive Helen Barnett added: "This is a key piece of work for Active Luton, ensuring that the planned Aquatics Centre has the maximum impact on growth in participation and development of opportunities across all water-based activities."
