M&C expands to Merseyside
Millennium & Copthorne Hotels (M&C) has announced plans to open its first hotels in Liverpool.
Two 180-bedroom hotels will be built at the heart of the £160m Central Village regeneration scheme, being developed by Merepark and Ballymore.
Copthorne Hotel Liverpool will face a new public zone called Newington Square, while Millennium Hotel Liverpool will be built within a refurbished and extended grade 2-listed building.
The conference and function facilities, gym/spa and bars and restaurants are aimed at leisure and corporate customers, and will be open to both residents and the general public.
Architects Woods Bagot designed the properties, which are scheduled to open in 2012.
Millennium & Copthorne CEO Richard Hartman said: “The addition of these two hotels to our growing UK portfolio marks a significant step forward in our intention to manage properties in the best locations available. We are a destination-focused hotel group with the right hotels in the right places.”
Merepark and Ballymore will kick start work on the first phase of the Central Village later this year. The development will include 140,000sq ft (13,000sq m) of retail and leisure space, a cinema, a further hotel and serviced apartments facing a new public square.
Richard Peel, director of Merepark, said: “This is clearly not only a significant milestone for the Central Village project but also for Liverpool’s growing reputation as a world class tourist destination.”
