Jubilee plans announced

A pop concert and World Cup screenings in Buckingham Palace, a fireworks display and beacon lighting in the Mall are all plans that have been announced as part of the Queen's Golden Jubilee celebrations.

Despite widespread reports of public indifference towards the Queen's 50th anniversary, Buckingham Palace has released a comprehensive list of 50 events for this summer's celebrations, starting on April 29 with dinner at 10 Downing Street.

The Queen will address both Houses of Parliament in Westminster Hall for only the fifth time in her reign and embark on a 14-week tour of Britain from Cornwall to the Outer Hebrides with the Duke of Edinburgh.

The regional tours will culminate with the closing of the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. The Golden Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend will last for four days from June 1 to 4 and include a ceremonial procession, a national service at St Paul's Cathedral, a balcony appearance at Buckingham Palace and an RAF fly-past.

Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell hopes the events will be a major draw for foreign tourists that have stayed away since September 11 and the foot and mouth crisis. 'I hope the Queen's programme will not only provide an opportunity for the nation to celebrate, but encourage overseas visitors to join in the festivities. The Jubilee is a unique event, this is a great year to come to the UK,' she said.
