A bid by the European Broadcast Union (EBU) for European broadcast rights to the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2016 Summer Olympics has been rejected by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The EBU, which acquires sports rights on behalf of members broadcasters from across the continent, failed to meet the IOC's demands with what it deemed to be the maximum price that it could afford.
Fritz Pleitgen, EBU president, said: "We have worked with the IOC since 1956 to deliver the Olympic Games to the broadest possible audience, and ensure maximum exposure of the Olympic Games, and also Olympic Spots between the Games.
"We note that there are different views about the future monetary broadcast value of the Games. EBU members were surprised by the high financial expectation of the IOC."
The decision means that the BBC, which has screened the Olympics since 1948, could now face rival bids for coverage rights from ITV and pay-TV company, Sky.
