The University of Hawaii at Hilo has started work on a US$14.3m (£7.3m) fitness centre, due to open early 2008.
The Student Life and Events Center – which has been in the planning for 10 years – will feature a fitness room, aerobics studio, martial arts studio, weights room, performance testing, Olympic-sized swimming pool, classrooms, changing rooms, poolside juice bar and indoor café. A second phase of work will see the creation of a conference centre and events area.
The centre will expand recreation activities for the 3,500 students on campus, and will also target the 70,000-strong Hilo community with the intention of transforming Hilo into a ‘college town’.
Located by the University of Hawaii Hilo Athletic Complex, the project was designed by Design Partners and is being built by Isemoto Contracting.
