Death by misadventure verdict for weightlifter
An inquest held on 13 September recorded a verdict of death by misadventure on 29-year-old Matthew Sperring, who died as a result of weightlifting at the Olympiad Leisure Centre, Chippenham on 29 April this year.
The post mortem found that lifting weights had caused a rupture in his heart.
At the inquest, Adrian Jones, managing director of North Wilts Leisure, which owns the gym, said Mr Sperring had undergone an induction and medical check before joining and that staff had acted promptly and followed the correct procedure when the tragedy occurred.
