Coventry has been selected as the host city of the 2007 UK School Games.

The announcement was made at the conclusion of the inaugural four-day event which closed in Glasgow over the weekend.

More than 1,000 talented school children from across the country travelled to Glasgow to compete at competition venues in the city in swimming, athletics, fencing, gymnastics and table tennis.

Next year's event will be run in partnership with Coventry City Council, Coventry University, Coventry Sports Trust, and the University of Warwick. The city council has also agreed to contribute £50,000.

Sports events for athletes with disabilities will also form part of the games and three additional sports are to be agreed with city organisers and national governing bodies.

Steve Grainger, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, which coordinated the event, praised the hard work and support of the volunteers, officials and spectators: "We are thrilled at the success of this inaugural UK School Games and the level of competition across the five sports has been quite incredible.

"The Glasgow Games have signalled the beginning of a very bright future for competitive school sport across the country, will live long in the memory, and will act as an inspiration for next year and beyond, " he added.
