Charlton Lido is transformed following £2m refurbishment programme
London's historic Charlton Lido, a 50m outdoor heated pool, is set to reopen following a massive £2m refurbishment to bring a new range of sports and leisure facilities to the local community.
Operated by charitable social enterprise GLL, operator of Better leisure centres, Charlton Lido will see work continue behind the scenes during 2013 to rejuvenate communal areas and provide new health and fitness facilities.
The final stage of development will include a new gym and exercise studio, as well as new reception, café and seating areas - with work scheduled to be completed by 2014.
From Easter 2013, Charlton Lido will be open all year round. The revamped lido has been designed to appeal to all members of the community. In addition to recreational swimming, the pools will host a range of lessons and courses and will also become a training venue for the Greenwich Royals Swimming Club.
Commenting on the refurbishment of Charlton Lido, Mark Sesnan, Managing Director of charitable social enterprise GLL, said: "As part of GLL's legacy commitments, it's hugely exciting to be able to keep Charlton Lido open year round.
"The heated pools mean that even in the depths of winter, the water will be warm and everyone will be able to enjoy the unique experience of open air swimming.
"We're also keen to make people aware of the new leisure facilities that will open on site later this year. A new gym and studio will mean that even if visitors prefer to stay on dry land, they will be able to enjoy what Charlton Lido has to offer and improve their fitness as well."
The refurbishment of Charlton Lido is the cornerstone of the of the £4m Olympic legacy that has transformed Hornfair Park into a multi-sports hub park, which includes new tennis and basketball courts, and a BMX track. It has been made possible thanks to funding from GLL, The Royal Borough of Greenwich Council and Sport England.
