Cardiff Council pushes Active Card scheme
Cardiff Council is to issue contract memberships for its leisure centres as a result of a £10m leisure budget deficit.
Due to pressure from private sector gyms, the council is pushing its Active Card scheme, which allows people access to its gyms, swimming pools and fitness classes from £19.50 a month.
Councillor Nigel Howells, executive member for sport, leisure and culture said: "The many refurbishments to our facilities demonstrate the council's commitment to improve leisure facilities and help people lead healthier lifestyles. We are pleased to be able to provide the Active Card scheme which offers value for money and will attract many more people into getting active and keeping fit."
However, the council has reportedly not ruled out price increases for pay-per-play usage, which has not gone down well with some locals.
A council spokesperson said: “[Central to plans to improve our leisure offer] is a major drive to encourage and increase use of the Active Card which gives regular users attractive deals covering a wide range of activities that our leisure and sport facilities provide, we are also looking to modernise our systems to allow for online bookings to be introduced following requests from customers.
“The actual detail of how these changes will be implemented and the business cases to support any decisions are being looked at."
