Campaign to save historic weir and wetlands
Local residents in the Peak District have launched a campaign to raise £230,000 by March in order to save a piece of industrial heritage.
With support from the Peak District National Park Authority, the Calver Weir Restoration Project (CWRP) was earmarked to receive £1.25m by the Heritage Lottery Fund last Spring.
However, the group still has to raise £230,000 toward the total restoration costs of £1.65m by next March, or the grant could be in jeopardy.
This is on top of pledges of volunteer labour and non-cash contributions worth £170,000 already achieved.
CWRP was set up to save the weir, built in 1778, both for its heritage and wildlife value.
The site includes a Grade II-listed former cotton factory a wetland habitat which harbours scarce species such as harvest mice, water voles, wild orchids, yellow loosestrife and wood clubrush.
The Peak District National Park Authority has helped the group with funding applications, grants, advice and practical help.
CWRP also proposes footpath improvements, information panels, new handrails and seats.
