The historic Charles Street Jail in Boston, Massachusetts, US, is being renovated and turned into a four-star hotel.
The US$120m (£63m, 94m euro) Liberty Hotel will comprise 300 bedrooms – including 10 suites – three venues for dining and cocktails, 6,000sq ft (57,500sq m) of meeting space and a health and fitness centre.
The catwalks, vestiges of jail cells and oversize windows of the original 1851 granite jail structure are being restored.
The project is a joint venture of Carpenter & Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts and Kennedy Associates of Seattle, Washington. MTM Luxury Lodging of Seattle will operate the property.
The project architect is Cambridge Seven Associates and Alexandra Champalimaud & Associates of New York will design the interior. The general contractor is Suffolk Construction of Boston. The hotel is set to open in summer 2007. Details: www.libertyhotel.com
