BHA members urged to check supply chain as FSA investigates ‘fraudulent’ frozen meat supplier
The BHA is urging its members to check their supply chain for frozen meat after learning that the Food Standards Agency (FSA) has suspended the trading license of a supplier in Northern Ireland.
Following a police raid last week, EuroFreeze (Ireland) of County Fermanagh is under investigation with respect to a series of alleged illegal activities, including the illegal application of false health marks, the exporting of beef into the EU and the re-boxing and repackaging of frozen meat to extend the shelf life.
One of the illegal counterfeit health marks allegedly used is that of Moy Park, one of the largest poultry suppliers in Northern Ireland.
There is also a licensed Pet Food plant on the site which is an obvious cause of concern given the activities being carried out.
All BHA members are advised to take the following precautionary steps:
1. Establish as far as possible through your supply chain whether any meat supplied to you may originate from Eurofreeze.
2. If supplies are found they should be destroyed and the costs recharged to the supplier.
3. Inform us at the BHA of the action you have taken.
The FSA will be releasing a statement to the press together with a Food Alert to local authorities in due course. The FSA also recognises that products may have been purchased inadvertently, and is likely to take legal action against Eurofreeze (Ireland).
