Australian Standard on indoor play
The Australian Standards committee, ME51, has been provided with a starting point document drafted by Alan Grant, President Lollipops Playland (who has 12 years’ experience in the Australasian Indoor Play industry).
The draft document draws heavily on the 2002 British Code of Practice for Soft Indoor Play areas, BS8409 and he also referred to an earlier draft document prepared by Trevor Tobias from Rugrats Retreat in Melbourne (Draft code of Practice for safety in indoor play, 1988). The first draft document covers key areas of indoor play including:
– Planning and development
– Design and Layout – Managing the indoor play area
– Inspection, maintenance and cleaning – First aid and emergency procedures
The ME51 Committee is likely to consider this draft ‘starting point’ at its February 2006 meeting, and if it’s accepted as a good document to build upon, they will then call for more industry input and build the standard clause by clause until the first draft of an Australian standard for indoor play (AS3533.5) is ready for comment in the second half of 2006.
