Alicante safari park shuts down
Vergel Safari Park in Alicante, Spain, has closed.
The 500,000sq m (5.3 million sq ft) park announced on its website that it was to close indefinitely.
The recession, as well as competition from rival parks in Benidorm and Valencia, are thought to be the cause of the closure.
The park, which had been open for 33 years, will still keep half of its 50 staff on behind the scenes for the next five months to care for the 460 animals.
