£500,000 canal project planned
The canalside of the Paddington arm of the Great Union Canal is to get a £500,000 makeover and will be linked to London’s cycling network.
The Westbourne Green Canalside open space, which stretches from Harrow Road to St Mary Magdalene’s Church, will boast a new cycle route and a network of pedestrian paths as the result of a collaboration between Westminster City Council, the environmental charity Groundwork, Transport for London and the Westbourne Neighbourhood Forum.
It will also feature an interactive Green Campus – which aims to provide a range of environmental learning activities – a community garden and a mooring point for an educational barge.
Dr Leith Penny, the council’s director of environment and leisure, said: “This is an incredibly exciting project, which will transform an unloved and unused part of the city into a valuable green space for everyone to enjoy.
“We are keen to bring open spaces into public use whenever possible and assist in working with the local community to improve the environment.”
Funding will come from the council, with additional monies coming from Transport for London's Cycling on Greenways Grant (£150,000), the LAA Liveability Network (£60,000), WCC Capital Programme (£20,000) and EDF Energy (£10,000).
The work is being carried out by Essex-based SSG Landscape Construction and is expected to be completed by July this year.
