A £3m sports centre has opened at Featherstone Technology College, Pontefract, West Yorkshire.
The centre, which was built after a fire destroyed the old sports hall in 2005, will be run by Wakefield Council’s Sport and Active Lifestyles service.
The council commissioned NPS-North East to design and construct the facility, which was built using sustainable materials.
The centre comprises a new sports hall, which is marked out for badminton, basketball, bocchia, hockey, volleyball and five-a-side football; a gymnasium; a fitness suite and changing rooms. There are also floodlit outdoor playing surfaces.
Trevor Izon, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for children and young people, said: “The new centre will be a great addition to sports provision in the district. Students will benefit during term time and citizens will benefit when it is used as a community facility.”
Students will use the facility as part of the college’s sports provision, and the public will be able to use it in the evenings, weekends and school holidays.
