£1m improvements for Silsden AFC
By Caroline Wilkinson
Silsden Association Football Club near Harrogate, Yorkshire, has received £963,696 funding package to develop new sports facilities. The FA Charter Standard Community Club received £693,596 from the Football Foundation and £300,000 from the government as part of the Community Club Development Programme.
The upgrade of the club's facilities aims to encourage community participation in sport particularly football, cricket and bowling and also to serve the club's existing 883 members and 24 teams with better facilities.
The money will help finance a new pavilion, to replace the existing 100-year-old building, and will include eight new changing rooms, a medical and physiotherapy room and a multi-purpose room.
It will also fund the reconfiguration of the existing grass pitches and the purchase of new land in order to provide up to five junior and three new full-size pitches as well as a cricket pitch.
Andrew Wadsworth FA's county development manager of West Riding County, said: "The Silsden project was highlighted as one of the top strategic priority projects in the county due to the size of the club and the strength of the football development programme that the football club has in place.
"The project will also benefit other sports and provide additional opportunities for the local community."
The grants fund 92 per cent of the project and the remaining 8 per cent was raised by the junior and senior football clubs and cricket club, with a £500 donation from Silsden Town Council.
Construction is expected to begin this month.
