The Helix has started work on a major £43m scheme that will lead to the transformation of a 300-hectare (741-acre) site between Falkirk and Grangemouth.

The first phase of the development will feature a central park, featuring an enclosed lagoon and an outdoor events space to provide a new visitor attraction. Stage one will also feature the development of a new canal link, with The Kelpies - two 30m (98ft) horse head sculptures - providing the centrepiece.

The Big Lottery Fund has provided £25m towards the scheme through the Living Landmarks programme, with pathways, cycle networks and other community facilities also planned. Land Engineering is the first contractor to start work on site, which will carry out landscape improvements to the south of the Helix site.

Falkirk Council leader Craig Martin said: "The scale and ambition of the Helix has already generated great excitement locally and nationally. "This is set to grow as we start to transform the site and move towards delivering this landmark environmental initiative."

Anne Widdop, chair of the Helix Trust Board, added: "It will deliver a key tourism and growth opportunity for the region, putting the Falkirk and Grangemouth area firmly on the map."
