Work starts on £12m Kent history centre
Work has started on the development of a new £12m purpose-built history and library centre in Maidstone, Kent, which is set to contain around 14km (8.7 miles) of archive material.
Kent County Council (KCC) has secured an agreement with London-based development partner Bouygues Development to deliver the complex, which will house documents, maps and images relating to the county's history. Improved library and information technology services for local residents, an archive search room, a community history area, a digital studio and a space for events and display are planned as part of the centre.
KCC cabinet member for community services Mike Hill said: "There will be opportunities for everyone to visit to trace their family history, enjoy an improved range of books and IT services, take part in events and enjoy the shop and refreshments area, all within a major new building, which brings together the County Archives, County Central Library and Maidstone Town Library." Bouygues Development, which is due to complete work by spring 2012, is also developing a number of residential properties as part of the scheme.
