Vaizey opens £10m Zellig development
A new £10m complex for creative industries has been unveiled as part of Birmingham's Custard Factory arts quarter by culture minister Ed Vaizey.
The 100,000sq ft (9,290sq m) development will provide a home to more than 100 enterprises and is centred around three top-lit courtyards. Located in the heart of the city, the new Custard Factory quarter occupies the site of a former 5-acre (2-hectare) sprawl of factories built by custard inventor Sir Alfred Bird in the 19th century.
Vaizey said: "It's easy to forget that most great enterprises have been sparked by the vision and energy of one person. The list of entrepreneurs who have started a small business and proceeded to change the way we live is a long one. "I particularly like the way in which the Custard Factory at large has fostered such a commercially fertile working community."
Custard Factory founder Bennie Gray added: "In the past, Birmingham was known as The City of a Thousands Trades, today, we must make it the city of a thousands opportunities and that means unleashing our aspiring young entrepreneurs."
