Transition sports day for Edinburgh primary school children
Edinburgh Leisure recently welcomed 150 children from eight local primary schools to Drumbrae Leisure Centre for its first 'Transition Sports Day'.
The 11- to 12-year-olds were offered a comprehensive taster of the type of sports and actitivies on offer through Edinburgh Leisure, in a move designed to combat the sharp drop-off in participation associated with the 'transition' from primary to secondary school.
Activities on offer included unihoc, badminton, aquajets, gym circuits and boxercise; each of which would, hopefully, encourage the young people to enjoy and make a habit of physical activity - with the help of their free Edinburgh Leisure Card, entitling them to reduced access to the trust's 30 centres.
Following the sports day, attendance at the leisure centre’s weekend youth club doubled.
Stuart Ferrier, sports & service development manager, said: "These events will give young people the opportunity to sample actitivies instead of just reading about them, while also familiarising them with new surroundings and experiences.
"The results so far speak for themselves and this is undoubtedly a programme that we will look to roll out across our other centres."
