Stax to open £19m Amida health club and spa next January
Stax Lesiure is spending £19m on its next Amida health club and spa, set to open in January 2004.
The Amida Hampton Racquets and Fitness Spa in Twickenham, which is already under construction, will be the second development of the Amida concept. The first - Amida Total Wellbeing in Beckenham - was named Day Spa of the Year at the Professional Spa Awards last month.
The Hampton club is being built from scratch on 78,000sq ft of former local authority land and will include 13 external tennis courts and a mature nine-hole golf course.
Indoors, there will be four squash courts, four badminton courts, a training pool, a 12,000sq ft gym equipped by Technogym, a dedicated free weights area, a hospitality area and a spa area.
According to Ian Sherman of Corporate Edge, which is designing the facility, the spa concept will be 'even bigger, better and sexier than at Beckenham'.
Members of the new facility will also be offered a VIP level of membership, with separate changing rooms.
Graham Thomas, chief executive of Stax Leisure, says finding the right locations is crucial to the rollout of the Amida concept. 'We've been involved with this site for six years - from the planning process to negotiating the purchase - and we think it's a superb site. We want to build very big clubs in very big locations,' he says. 'We'd certainly like to do a third and when the opportunity comes we will go for it.'
