Redevelopment of the Swan Centre's all weather pitch
Work on the state of the art all-weather pitch at the Swan Centre for Leisure is now complete. The £50,000 redevelopment saw the existing area converted into a two court 5-a-side facility with 3G playing surface.
The all weather pitches offer shock absorption, sliding properties and a natural grass like aesthetic appearance.
Funding was granted through the SITA TRUST enhancing communities fund and an 11.5 per cent contribution from Northumberland County Council made it possible.
Grants of up to £60,000 are available to not-for-profit organisations whose community leisure amenity improvement project has an overall cost of no more than £250,000.
Darren Humphrey, Facility Manager at The Swan Centre for Leisure said, "Our facility is at the heart of the community and is used by people of all ages. We are excited to be able to offer such a modern facility to the people of Berwick-upon-Tweed and are hopeful it will encourage wider community involvement."
Bookings have increased by 70 per cent with the majority of users making long term block bookings. The introduction of a 5-a-side league has encouraged 14 teams to compete regularly each week.
Neil Bradbury, the Executive Member for Customer Relations & Culture at Northumberland County Council said: "The all weather pitch at The Swan Centre for Leisure is an extremely popular facility but over the years it has become a victim of its own success.
"I am delighted that Northumberland County Council is able to play a part in the creation of a modern 3G replacement. Encouraging participation in sport is a key part in the Council's work to promote health and well being in the county and with the invaluable assistance of SITA Trust and our centre operator Tees Active; we have ensured that the right facilities are being created to achieve this."
