New stadium proposed for Whitehaven
Copeland Borough Council (CBC) has revealed that plans for a new community stadium in the Pow Beck Valley near Whitehaven, Cumbria, could be submitted next month.
A consortium comprising CBC; Whitehaven Rugby League Football Club; and Whitehaven Amateurs Football Association Club has appointed consultants WYG to draw up proposals. The new facility forms part of the Britain's Energy Coast initiative - funded by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Sellafield and Nuclear Management Partners.
Located on the site of an existing grass football pitch, the stadium would boast two stands - a south west stand catering for 580 standing spectactors and a 1,800-seat north west stand. Due to funding constraints, it is proposed that the north east and south east boundaries of the stadium will remain open and accommodating around 820 spectators.
However, CBC said that the open areas could be developed once funding becomes available.
