National waterways award winners revealed
A scheme to promote the heritage of Argyll's Crinan Canal and the regeneration of Walsall Waterfront are among the winners of the 2011 Waterways Renaissance Awards.
Dearne Valley Green Heart, South Yorkshire, came out on top in the recreation and tourism category, while an innovative Olympic Park construction scheme was also recognised. Nearly 20 projects based on canals and rivers across the UK were recognised for their role in rejuvenating waterways at the awards ceremony, which was held in Birmingham.
Now in their ninth year, the Waterways Renaissance Awards are operated by the Waterways Trust and sponsored by CPC Civils, Halcrow, May Gurney and Morrison Construction. Roger Hanbury, chief executive of the Waterways Trust, said: "It is truly inspiring to see that people and organisations are continuing to work together to realise the benefits of our canals and rivers for communities across the UK."
