Moulin Rouge loses appeal for racism charge
A Paris appeal court has upheld a 10,000 euros fine against the Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris for racism after it refused to employ a black Senegalese man in its restaurant three years ago, reports AFP.
The court also ordered the establishment to publicise the verdict in two French newspapers and pay 4,500 Euros in damages to Abdoulaye Marega, now a 25-year-old naturalised French citizen.
The cabaret club also has to pay 2,300 Euros to the association that took up Marega’s case, SOS Racisme, and the manager of the Moulin Rouge restaurant that refused Marega’s application Micheline Beuzit, was ordered to pay 1,500 Euros. Beuzit had turned down Marega for a post as waiter in November 2000 on the pretext that he did not speak English or Spanish.
But the local employment office later testified that Beuzit had then contacted it to say the Moulin Rouge “doesn’t recruit coloured people for the dining room, only perhaps in the kitchen.”
